been detected, are being recorded and the Police have been notified and are
on their way

The new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) came into force at the end of May 2018. All Business owners need to ensure they are compliant or they could face fines of up to 20 million Euros or 4% of turnover, whichever is greater.
What most Business owners are not aware is that GDPR covers commercial video surveillance systems. All identifiable images captured of people is considered personal data under GDPR. Therefore, at a data protection level, commercial video surveillance systems require the same level of thought and care that is being paid to other affected areas of a Business/Organisation.
In addition, most Business owners are not aware that commercial video surveillance systems are governed by guidance, regulations and legislation provided by the Information Commissionsers Office in the form of the 1998 Data Protection Act and the more recent CCTV Code of Practice. The GDPR has impacted further on these requirements.
The GDPR does not discourage the use of video surveillance systems, but instead encourages a balance for all parties regarding its usage. Whilst in the past, the concerns of the data subjects may have been disregarded in favour of the overriding interests of the Business owner or video surveillance system controller, this is no longer the case.
In short, most Business owners who have a video surveillance system are not aware of their data responsibilities and operate their system illegally leaving themselves open potentially to large fines.
